Wedding Gown Preservation Boxes

Wedding gown preservation box documentation

Why should I invest in a Wedding Gown Preservation Box?

Our simple reply is: to avoid regret.

For the cost of a fancy dinner, you can preserve a witness to your family’s love story so it can be passed on to the next generation. Some things are just too precious to risk losing.

Our long reply, based on over 20 years of experience caring for gowns:

It’s not just about being sentimental or “keeping memories.” It’s about protecting an irreplaceable piece of your love story  It’s about protecting an irreplaceable piece of your love story. You never really know; one day, someone you love may wish to wear your wedding gown as a tribute to her mother’s love and legacy. Today, you may think your gown is just for the wedding day. Often, it’s only later, when you have children, that you realize your wedding gown holds an irreplaceable place in your family’s story.

Sadly, in over 20 years of caring for wedding gowns, we’ve seen too many gowns lost because of improper storage. Yellowed fabric, permanent stains, and weakened fabric have destroyed heirloom gowns. We want to help brides preserve this important part of their family’s story.

This is why ABSOLUTE partnered with Foster-Stephens, a company with over 90 years of expertise in wedding gown preservation boxes and a trusted supplier to wedding gown specialists around the world. ABSOLUTE uses the same preservation boxes used by experts worldwide.

Whether you prefer the simple reply or the long reply, the conclusion is the same. Why invest? For the cost of a fancy dinner, you can preserve a witness to your family’s love story so it can be passed on to the next generation. Some things are just too precious to risk losing.

The wrong box can stain your wedding gown. The Preservation Boxes we offer are made by Foster-Stephens, a 90-year-old company specializing in long-term textile storage. With Foster-Stephens boxes, brides can be confident that the materials used are safe for wedding gown storage.  A full discussion appears at the end of this page.

ABSOLUTE has discontinued the use of vacuum packaging after learning of a study shared by the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists indicating that the acidic nature of vacuum plastic bags will cause fabric yellowing over time.

Simply stated, a wedding gown stored in plastic-based vacuum packaging will yellow over time.

ABSOLUTE no longer recommends vacuum packaging as a method of long-term wedding gown preservation.  For brides who would like a fuller explanation, you may search the term “phenolic yellowing” or watch the video linked here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9uaNZbManE

FOSTER-STEPHENS Preservation Boxes

ABSOLUTE proudly offers these archival-grade Foster-Stephens Preservation Boxes, a testament to ABSOLUTE’s commitment to providing world-class service, ensuring that your dream gown is stored in the best possible manner.

True story:  We did not simply order these boxes online. We went to the Foster-Stephens headquarters in the U.S. and sat down with the 2nd and 3rd generation owner-operators. For reference, a photo from our visit to Foster-Stephens is included at the end of this page.

They showed us records of gowns preserved in their boxes for over 50 years. That firsthand assurance is what we pass on to every bride we serve.

Wedding Gown Preservation Box Process

1.  Certified Cleaning:

Every gown is cleaned to international standards, ensuring the complete removal of all unseen residues. This critical first step guarantees the gown's long-term preservation.

2. Steaming:
We gently steam the gown, using specialized techniques mastered for over 20 years. This allows the delicate fabrics to relax and return to their original silhouette and drape.

3.  Preservation Box Packaging:
Our experts apply the standards and procedures we learned through training in the United States with the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists. Each gown is meticulously packed in a Foster-Stephens acid-free preservation box for preservation storage.

A Gentle Reminder

The preservation box is designed with a viewing window so you can see your gown without exposing it to the environment.

If you wish to open the box further, please note that the international guarantee becomes void once the seal is broken.

If you must open the box, please wear gloves. This simple step helps protect the gown from the natural oils on your hands, which may transfer to the fabric over time.

Every detail matters when it comes to keeping your gown safe, cared for, and as beautiful as the memories it holds.

● Store the box in a cool, dry place.
● Avoid direct sunlight.
● Do not store in damp areas.

● Avoid repeated opening unless necessary.
● If you must, handle the gown wearing gloves.

What makes a preservation box different?

Wedding Gown in Foster Stephen Preservation Box in Gold and Pink Colors

The wrong box can stain your wedding gown.

Many boxes that come with wedding gowns are laminated only on the outside. Inside, they may still use ordinary brown board or paper. Over time, especially in humid conditions, these inner materials can cause discoloration or stains on the gown.

Even if the inside of the box looks white, it is still difficult to know whether the board, glue, and coatings are acid-free and safe for delicate fabrics. We have seen cases where the storage box itself stained the gown.

The Preservation Boxes we offer are made by Foster-Stephens, a 90-year-old company specializing in long-term textile storage. With Foster-Stephens boxes, brides can be confident that the materials used are safe for wedding gown storage.

Foster-Stephens boxes are the same preservation boxes used by certified wedding gown specialists around the world. This is a testament to the world-class standard ABSOLUTE brings to wedding gown care.

To ensure the long-term protection of your gown, our preservation service must begin with our cleaning process.

Unfortunately, we cannot place a gown in our preservation box if it has been cleaned by another provider. This is because improperly cleaned or insufficiently rinsed gowns can develop unseen stains or residues over time, which would compromise the archival quality of the preservation and defeat its purpose.

For your gown to become a true heirloom, the process must be seamless and controlled from the very first step: expert cleaning by ABSOLUTE.

Yes, this is possible, but it is not recommended.

The issue is contamination through handling. After cleaning, the gown is packed in plastic and transported to the destination branch. During packing, transport, and later inspection, the gown may be exposed to contamination. The more the gown is handled, the greater the risk.

If the gown is boxed directly at our facility without being packed in plastic and transported, there is less chance of contamination. That is why direct boxing is the recommended option.

For your peace of mind, we document each step of the packaging procedure and can provide the photos upon request.

YES. In fact, that’s one of the most meaningful reasons to preserve a wedding gown—so it stays protected and ready, in case one day it’s worn again by someone who wants to honor you and your story.

The ABSOLUTE gown cleaning process does not use harsh chemicals that may cause skin irritation. This means your wedding gown can be worn straight from the preservation box.

But for a once-in-a-lifetime moment, we still recommend having the gown re-cleaned and prepared by ABSOLUTE before the big day, so you can look your ABSOLUTE Best.

Bride Tip: Avoid DIY “freshening.” Please don’t spray perfume, fabric fresheners (like Febreze), alcohol, or whitening products on the gown. These can leave rings, cause discoloration, or set stains that become harder to remove later. If you notice anything when you open the box, take a quick photo and contact ABSOLUTE right away—please don’t attempt to spot-clean it at home.

True Story: We first offered Preservation Boxes to preserve the love your gown represents after the wedding. Then, many brides who receive their gowns as early as 8 months before the wedding have asked us how to store their gowns properly to avoid unwanted yellowing and mold specks (“black dots”).

ABSOLUTE’s Gown Cleaning Service and Preservation Box Service provide safe storage and help keep your gown ready to wear straight out of the box.

  1. Bring your gown to ABSOLUTE for cleaning and Preservation Box service.
  2. About 3 weeks before your wedding, return the box to ABSOLUTE for final wedding-day preparation.  Your choice: (a) re-cleaning and steaming, or (b) steam-only shaping. Additional fees apply
  3. After the wedding, you may send the gown back to us for cleaning.  The same box can be used again for full preservation service to protect the love woven into the gown. The gown cleaning service fee will apply, but there is no need to purchase a new Preservation Box.

Bride Tip: If you received your gown months ahead, we recommend our Preservation Box service for proper storage so you can Look your ABSOLUTE Best on your special day.
